Counting

A channel where members count upwards in turn.

Updated 26 Oct 2026

In a counting channel, members take turns posting the next number, starting at 1.

A correct number is marked with a tick. An incorrect one is marked with a cross and, by default, starts the count again from 1.

Each channel keeps its own count and its own record. Up to 25 counting channels are supported.

The rules

  • Only the number at the start of a message is read, so "5" and "5 woo" both count. Ordinary conversation is ignored and never breaks the count.
  • Arithmetic is accepted. 2+2, (2+3)*4 and 10/2 all count when they produce the next number. Only whole-number results are accepted. This can be disabled.
  • The same member cannot count twice in a row by default. This can be disabled.
  • An incorrect number starts the count again from 1 and TalciGrade names who broke it. The reset can be disabled, so an incorrect number is simply rejected.

Deleted messages

If the message holding the current number is deleted, TalciGrade posts the number that was reached and the number that comes next, so the same number is not posted twice.

It also says who deleted it when that was somebody other than the person who posted it, such as a moderator clearing the channel.

The count itself is unaffected. Deleting a message does not reverse it.

Banning a member from counting

A member can be banned from counting, for a set length of time or until they are unbanned. Their numbers are then ignored: the count does not move.

/counting ban @member [hours] [reason] does it from Discord, /counting unban @member lifts it, and /counting bans lists who is banned. Those three work even on a server where the rest of the counting setup lives on the dashboard, because a ban is a moderation action rather than a setting.

Nobody is banned until you ban somebody.

A ban that has run out stays in the list, marked as ended, until it is removed.
