AutoMod

Automatic filtering of banned words, spam and invite links.

Updated 9 Aug 2026

AutoMod checks every message and acts without a moderator present.

Anything it does appears in your mod log and case history in the same form as an action taken by a person.

The filters

Filter Catches
Banned words Words you add yourself
Profanity General swearing, from a built-in list
Sexual content Explicit words, from a built-in list
Slurs Racist, homophobic and ableist slurs, from a built-in list
Spam Too many messages too quickly (5 in 10 seconds by default)
Mention spam Too many mentions too quickly
Caps Long messages that are mostly capital letters
Invite links Links to other Discord servers

Each filter is enabled independently and carries its own actions.

Only one filter acts per message

If a message breaks three rules, only one punishment happens. Slurs are checked first, so if a message contains both a slur and normal swearing, it gets treated as a slur (as that is more significant).

Detection of obfuscated words

Banned words are still detected when characters are substituted or repeated. 1d10t is detected as idiot, and so is iiidiot.

Matching is whole-word, so banning ass does not affect the word class.

Entries written as /pattern/ are treated as regular expressions. An invalid pattern is rejected when the settings are saved, rather than failing later.

The three built-in lists

Profanity, sexual content and slurs are separate settings rather than one.

Many servers permit ordinary swearing while still removing slurs on sight, so each list can be enabled on its own.

The lists cover English only and are not exhaustive. Terms specific to your community belong in Banned words.

What happens when a filter matches

Each filter carries its own set of actions.

Action What it does
Delete Removes the message
Warn Records a warning against the member
Timeout Times the member out for 10 minutes
Kick Removes the member from the server
Ban Bans the member

Selecting no actions puts the filter in detection-only mode, which is useful for reviewing what a new filter would catch before it acts.

Warn, timeout, kick and ban each create a case, so they appear in the mod log and in the member's history.

The member is told which filter matched, but never the configured values. A member timed out for spam is told "AutoMod: spam", not the message count and window.

Exemptions

  • The server owner and anyone with the Discord Administrator permission
  • Any role, channel or member added to the exemption list

Discord's own AutoMod

Discord provides its own AutoMod with word lists that Discord maintains. It can be enabled from the same page and runs alongside TalciGrade's filters.

Five options are available:

Option Blocks
Profanity General swearing, from Discord's list
Sexual content Explicit words, from Discord's list
Slurs Slurs, from Discord's list
Discord's spam filter Messages Discord judges to be spam
Discord's mention limit Messages carrying more mentions than your threshold allows

The first three cover the same categories as TalciGrade's own built-in lists, using Discord's wording. Any combination can be used.

TalciGrade configures this for you. It creates a single AutoMod rule in your server named TalciGrade presets and keeps it matching your selections. Disabling every preset removes the rule.

Manage Server is required. Without it your selections are saved but no rule is created.

By default Discord simply blocks the message and nothing else happens: no case is recorded and no action is taken against the member.

Turn on Count these as TalciGrade catches and a blocked message is treated as though TalciGrade's own filters had caught it. It uses the matching filter's actions, and it is recorded as a case in the member's history and counts toward automatic punishments.

Spam and mention limit count as TalciGrade's own spam and mention-spam filters. The three word lists share one rule in Discord, so a block from any of them counts as the most serious list you have switched on.

This does not replace anything. TalciGrade's filters keep checking every message Discord lets through, so both run together and a single message is never punished twice.

Choosing between them

Use Discord's for broad coverage that requires no maintenance, where blocking the message is sufficient.

Use TalciGrade's when the word list needs to be your own, or when you want the matching to catch spaced-out and letter-swapped spellings.

Setting it up

Open Moderation > Auto-mod on the Dashboard to enable filters, choose their actions, manage exemptions and switch on the Discord presets.
